What is the difference between MSS and BOS? When should I trade each?

Trade BOS for trend continuation entries (lower risk, adding to winners). MSS changes your bias; BOS confirms it.

Can I hide BOS lines and show only MSS for reversal trading?

Question 4

The break lines expire and disappear. Can I keep them longer?

Yes. Increase MaxAge from the default 75 to 150 or 200. This keeps break lines visible for longer, which is useful for seeing the history of structural breaks over a wider timeframe. Be aware that very old break lines may clutter the chart — find a balance between history and clarity based on your trading style.

The Trend column shows NEUTRAL for many symbols. What does this mean?

NEUTRAL means the indicator has not yet detected enough structural breaks to establish a directional bias. This happens when: (1) insufficient historical data is loaded — ensure additional bars are set to at least 500 by right-clicking the indicator column header, going to Studies > Edit for All Symbols..., and on the General tab, or (2) the market has been in a tight range without any swing levels being broken. Try reducing SwingStrength to detect more minor structural breaks, or wait for the market to produce a clear directional move.

Question 6

How do I filter for only MSS reversal signals and ignore BOS continuations?

Sort by SignalVal. MSS bullish reversals have value +2 and MSS bearish reversals have value -2. BOS signals have values of +1 or -1. Sort descending to see MSS bull (+2) at top, or ascending to see MSS bear (-2) at top. You can also visually distinguish by cell intensity — MSS signals use stronger green/red backgrounds than BOS signals.

Question 7

The Signal column shows a value but SigAge is very high (50+). Is this signal still relevant?

A high SigAge means the last structural break occurred many bars ago. The Trend column remains valid (BULL/BEAR), but the specific Signal is stale. Focus on symbols where SigAge is under 10 for the most actionable signals. Older signals are useful for confirming the existing trend bias but should not be used as fresh entry triggers.

I see both bright and light dots close together. What is happening?

Multiple structural breaks can occur in rapid succession during volatile markets. A bright green MSS dot followed quickly by a light green BOS dot means the trend reversed and immediately confirmed with a continuation break. This is actually a strong bullish signal — the structure shifted and immediately extended. Conversely, alternating bright green and bright red dots close together indicate choppy conditions with no sustained trend.

Can I show only MSS dots and hide BOS dots for a cleaner chart?

Yes. Set ShowBOS to false in the indicator inputs. Only MSS reversal dots (bright green and bright red) will appear. This is recommended for traders who only trade reversals and want the cleanest possible visual representation.

The dots appear several bars after the actual swing break. Is there a delay?

Structural breaks are detected on the bar where price closes beyond the swing level. There is no artificial delay — the dot appears on the exact bar where the close confirms the break. However, the swing level itself is only confirmed after SwingStrength bars on each side, so the level being broken was established several bars earlier. This is intentional for non-repainting accuracy.

The bars keep switching between green and red rapidly. The chart looks noisy.

Accepted Answer

Rapid color switching indicates choppy market structure with frequent MSS reversals. This is the market telling you there is no clear trend. Increase SwingStrength to 8 or 10 to require more significant structural breaks before changing the trend state. Alternatively, use a higher timeframe where structure is cleaner and transitions are less frequent.

The bars are all yellow (transition). When will a trend color appear?

Yellow bars appear before the first MSS event is detected. The indicator needs enough historical data to identify swing pivots and at least one structural break to establish a trend state. Ensure sufficient additional bars are loaded (500+ by right-clicking the indicator column header, going to Studies > Edit for All Symbols..., and on the General tab). Once the first MSS fires, bars will switch to green or red.

Can I use different colors for the trend states?

Yes. To change colors, right-click anywhere on the chart, go to Studies > Edit Studies..., select the indicator, click the Inputs tab, and change BullTrendColor, BearTrendColor, and TransitionColor to any TradeStation color name or RGB values. Popular alternatives: Cyan for bullish, Magenta for bearish, DarkGray for transition. Choose colors that work well with your chart background and other indicator overlays.
