I do not see any compression zones on my chart. Is the indicator working?

Compression zones only appear when volatility contracts below the threshold for at least iMinBars consecutive bars. If the market is trending strongly or experiencing high volatility, no compression will be detected. This is correct behavior — the indicator is telling you the market is not in a compression phase. Try lowering iThreshold to 0.70 to detect milder compression, or reduce iMinBars to 3 for faster zone activation.

Question 2

Which detection method should I use?

Method 1 (ATR Ratio) is the most versatile and works well on all instruments. It compares the short-term ATR to a longer baseline ATR. Method 2 (BB Bandwidth) is popular with traders who already use Bollinger Bands — it measures band width contraction. Method 3 (Range Ratio) focuses on individual bar ranges and catches narrow-range bar clusters. Start with Method 1 and experiment with the others on your preferred instrument.

Question 3

The compression zones look too wide. Can I make them tighter?

Accepted Answer

The channel boundaries are based on the actual high/low prices during the compression period. To see tighter channels, lower the iThreshold so only the most contracted periods qualify — this typically produces narrower ranges. You can also increase iMinBars to require longer compression duration, which filters out short choppy periods that may have wider ranges.

Question 4

Can I get an alert when a compression zone starts or when price breaks out?

Accepted Answer

The indicator includes AlertOnCompress (fires when a new compression zone begins) and AlertOnBreak (fires when price closes outside the channel boundary). Enable both in the inputs to receive audio alerts. For RadarScreen-based scanning across multiple symbols, use the Compression Zones RadarScreen study included in this bundle.

Question 5

Score shows 0 for every symbol. I do not see any compression signals.

Accepted Answer

A score of 0 means no compression is currently detected for that symbol. This is normal during trending or volatile market conditions. Try scanning a larger watchlist (100+ symbols) to find the few that are compressing. You can also lower iThreshold to 0.70 to detect milder compression phases, or switch to a different timeframe where consolidation is more evident.

Question 6

Can I scan using different detection methods for different symbols?

Accepted Answer

No. RadarScreen applies the same inputs to all symbols in the watchlist. If you want to compare methods, create a second RadarScreen window with a different iMethod setting. Alternatively, use Method 1 (ATR Ratio) as your default — it is the most versatile across different instrument types.

Question 7

The BrkDir column flashes but I missed the signal. How do I track recent breakouts?

Accepted Answer

BrkDir shows the direction of the last breakout (+1 bullish, -1 bearish) and persists until a new compression-then-breakout cycle occurs. Check the BrkTime column for the exact timestamp of the breakout. If BrkTime is recent (within the last few bars), the signal is still actionable. Sort by BrkDir to group all recent breakouts together.

The score text labels are cluttering my chart and overlapping each other.

Text labels accumulate as new compression bars are detected. Remove and re-apply the study to clear old labels. Set ShowScoreText to false for a cleaner view with dots only. You can also increase iThreshold to reduce the number of qualifying bars, or increase iMinBars so only sustained compression periods produce dots.

Question 9

I see dots but they are hard to distinguish from each other. How do I tell high scores from low scores?

Accepted Answer

The dot color intensity scales with the score — brighter dots indicate higher compression scores. If the color difference is subtle on your monitor, enable ShowScoreText to see numeric values next to each dot. You can also increase the plot weight in the Plots tab to make dots larger and easier to differentiate.

Can I use the ShowMe without the main chart indicator?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The ShowMe calculates compression independently and works as a standalone study. However, using it alongside the chart indicator gives you the full picture: the chart indicator shows the channel zone boundaries for breakout reference, and the ShowMe shows the intensity progression bar by bar.

Question 11

I do not see any colored bars on my chart. The indicator is applied but nothing is painted.

Accepted Answer

The PaintBar only colors bars during active compression phases. If the market is trending or experiencing high volatility, no compression will be detected and no bars will be painted. This is normal behavior — the absence of colored bars means the market is not compressed. Try lowering iThreshold to 0.70 or reducing iMinBars to 3 for more sensitive detection.

Question 12

Can I change the compression color to something other than yellow?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Right-click anywhere on the chart, go to Studies > Edit Studies..., select the study, and click the Inputs tab. Change the CompressColor input. You can enter any TradeStation color name (Cyan, Magenta, White, DarkGray, etc.) or use RGB values for custom colors. Choose a color that contrasts well with your chart's candlestick colors for maximum visibility.

Question 13

Too many bars are being painted. My chart looks mostly yellow.

Accepted Answer

The iThreshold setting is too permissive. Increase it closer to 0.50 to require tighter compression before bars are colored. Also increase iMinBars to require longer sustained compression before painting begins. If you are on a low timeframe, try a higher timeframe where compression phases are more distinct and shorter in bar count.
