Compression Zones PaintBar adds an unmissable visual layer to your chart by coloring price bars during active compression phases. When compression is detected, bars are painted in a distinct color that makes the consolidation period stand out immediately against normal candlestick colors. Non-compression bars retain their default chart colors, creating a clear visual boundary between trending and compressed states.

  • Yellow-tinted bars appear during active compression phases — the color makes consolidation zones impossible to miss even at a glance
  • Color intensity scales with compression score — faint yellow for mild compression (1.0-2.0), bright yellow for intense compression (4.0-5.0)
  • CompressColor input lets you customize the highlight color to match your chart theme — use any TradeStation color name or RGB value
  • Optional AlertOnCompress fires an audio alert when compression first begins
  • Optional AlertOnBreak fires an audio alert when price breaks out of the compression channel
  • Uses the same three detection methods as the full bundle — ATR Ratio, BB Bandwidth, or Range Ratio
  • Non-compression bars retain their normal chart appearance for zero visual noise during trending conditions

The PaintBar is the fastest way to identify compression phases on a busy chart. When you see yellow bars, you know the market is coiling. When the yellow bars end and normal colors resume, the breakout is beginning. This makes it especially valuable when monitoring multiple chart windows simultaneously.

All signals are guaranteed non-repainting. Once a bar is colored on close, the color will never change.

Who This Is For

Compression Zones PaintBar is designed as a visual confirmation layer that works alongside the chart indicator and ShowMe study. Use it when you want the fastest possible recognition of compression phases — colored bars are impossible to miss even when scrolling quickly through charts or watching multiple windows.

Apply it to the same chart as the Compression Zones chart indicator. The channel zones show you the breakout boundaries, and the painted bars show you exactly which bars are in the compression phase. The transition from colored bars back to normal candlestick colors marks the beginning of the breakout.

Particularly effective on 1-minute to 5-minute charts during active trading sessions when you need split-second awareness of market state across multiple chart windows. The color contrast between yellow compression bars and normal candlestick colors makes the phase change visible even in your peripheral vision.

Common Issues

I do not see any colored bars on my chart. The indicator is applied but nothing is painted.

The PaintBar only colors bars during active compression phases. If the market is trending or experiencing high volatility, no compression will be detected and no bars will be painted. This is normal behavior — the absence of colored bars means the market is not compressed. Try lowering iThreshold to 0.70 or reducing iMinBars to 3 for more sensitive detection.

Can I change the compression color to something other than yellow?

Yes. Right-click anywhere on the chart, go to Studies > Edit Studies..., select the study, and click the Inputs tab. Change the CompressColor input. You can enter any TradeStation color name (Cyan, Magenta, White, DarkGray, etc.) or use RGB values for custom colors. Choose a color that contrasts well with your chart's candlestick colors for maximum visibility.

Too many bars are being painted. My chart looks mostly yellow.

The iThreshold setting is too permissive. Increase it closer to 0.50 to require tighter compression before bars are colored. Also increase iMinBars to require longer sustained compression before painting begins. If you are on a low timeframe, try a higher timeframe where compression phases are more distinct and shorter in bar count.
